For the last few days I haven't been able to shift out of park unless I put my key in the hole on top of the steering column and put it in neutral, then re-crank the car and then shift to Reverse or Drive. This is happening every time.

This is happening every time.You should be fine driving the car. The cap has a float attached to a switch. When the fluid gets low, it trips the switch, causing the brake light to come on. If the switch is bad, you could get an intermittent light, so changing the cap is worth a try. However, this switch is not the only way this light is activated.
